등위 접속사(and, but, or, for)나 종속접속사로 연결되지 않은 단 하나의 문장을 단문이라고 한다.
2. 동사에 따른 단문의 형식(Five Basic Patterns of Sentences)
단문의 형식을 구분하는 기준은 동사이며, 동사에 따라 다음과 같이 분류한다.
자동사(Intransive Verb)
- Pattern 1 (1형식) - S + V
- Pattern 2 (2형식) - S + V + SC
타동사(Transive Verb)
- Pattern 3 (3형식) - S + V + O
- Pattern 4 (4형식) - S + V + IO + DO
- Pattern 5 (5형식) - S + V + O + OC
P1 Example: The development of wind power practically ceased until the early 1970s.
P2 Example: The chain reaction is the basis of nuclear power.P3 Example: Silicon conducts electricity in an unusual way.P4 Example: We are sending you the balance of the payment in this letter.P5 Example: The plant shutdown left the entire area an economic disaster.
수동태(Passive Voice)
또 다른 단문의 문장 형태로 수동태가 있다. 아래의 왼쪽이 수동태이며, 오른쪽이 능동태(Active Voice)이다. Saccharin is now permitted as The FDA now permits saccharin
an additive in food. as an additive in food.
위의 동사에 따른 문장의 분류는 영미에서는 형태론적인 문장 분석이며, 잘 다뤄지지 않는다. 특히 미국, 영국, 호주 등 영어권에서 살다가 온 아이들이 이러한 것을 접하면 어려워하는 이유이다. 굳이 이러한 것을 알 필요는 없지만, 외국어권에서는 문장을 분석하는데 도움이 되기 때문에 알아두면 좋다.
